Plan ahead. Coming into each day with a plan of attack helps prepare you mentally for the tasks at hand, well before you get started. Make a plan the night before or first thing in the morning by determining the top 3 things you must accomplish by end of day. By deciding ahead of time which 3 things are mission critical to a successful day, you know exactly where to start your morning.

Be realistic. When your days are long, and your to do list is even longer, it’s crucial to allot enough time to complete each task on your list. If you have a day full of meetings with no computer time, don’t plan to write the first chapter of your book! Instead, make it a goal to simply keep your inbox clear between meetings.

Tackle the tough stuff first. Morning is the most focused and productive time for most people. When you start your day by planning ahead (see tip #1), you’ll have a roadmap that tells you exactly what you need to do first. Use mornings to tackle these priority projects or your most difficult or dreaded tasks, like calling back an upset client or writing a new blog post. After you’ve accomplished your priority or most difficult tasks for the day, the rest should be smooth sailing.

Keep track. It’s important to keep your to do list in one location so nothing falls through the cracks. Whether you keep your list in Trello, ToDoist, or an old school notebook, having everything in one place will ensure you’re never hunting for a lost post-it or apologizing for a missed deadline.

Enlist help. Triage tasks that don’t need to be done by you. Outsource tasks to your partner or personal assistant. For example, if your partner will be near the grocery store, let them handle the shopping list while you wrap up at the office. Have your assistant pick up your dry cleaning, plan your family’s summer trip, and find a handyman for that broken vanity mirror.
